Meeseeks serve as intentionally pointless easter eggs, fan service served with a touch of spite. Recent events have shown that fascism isn’t quite as distant as high school history class led us to believe. It’s both a joke and a strong political statement, which fascist-Morty, representing the obnoxious fringe of the show’s fanbase, explicitly wants to end, seeking a return to random nihilism and szechuan sauce.Putting aside the bizarre desire for a story to never, ever reflect society, in any way, this episode appears to imply that from now on, Rick and Morty will dip in and out of political satire, according to the whims of the writers the end-of-episode fourth-wall-break has become something of a season-premiere tradition. As Rick cycles through different realities, and different incarnations of fascism, it’s “wasp-Rick” that turns out to be the most empathetic, despite the insect’s cruel, parasitic life cycle. And at this point, Morty has proved himself capable of emulating Rick, if he needs to, equipping himself with weird and powerful sci-fi gadgets, effortlessly taking down police officers and soldiers, until the crystal allows his surrender.Quick cameos from Gearhead and Mr. Pastel Memories (A Brief Discussion of Episode 1) Another Anime Review. The hologram that Rick programmed to instruct Morty in the event of his death is unable to sway Morty with his overly inclusive language, leaving Rick to reanimate in the body of a random clone in another universe. And in a depressingly accurate reflection of the state of the world, Rick repeatedly spawns in fascist societies, which has never been the default state of Rick and Morty’s world, until today.
Sometimes we won’t even do anything.”Rick and Morty seems to be promising a new era of creative freedom, a balance between forward-thinking and spontaneity (with 70 episodes ordered by Adult Swim, the writers have plenty of opportunities to experiment). The post-credits scene delivers a final, devastating blow to Morty, revealing that the easy death offered by the crystal wasn’t the end of a life spent with Jessica, but comforting words delivered to a dying patient. A new political awareness? Or at least, sometimes:“Sometimes we’ll do classic stuff, sometimes we’ll do whatever. But something feels a little different the show’s opening, with the metaphorical death of Rick, and Rick’s realization that fascism is more common than even he, in his infinite cynicism, suspected, hints at change. As wasp-Rick comes to his rescue, Rick’s hologram is finally sucked into physical reality by the ooze, but is quickly taken down by the repulsive breeding practices of the wasp. Thus, Morty and Rick return to normalcy, screaming at each other in the garage about future episodes of the show, equilibrium restored. Obsessing over the future is a surefire way to suck the joy out of life indeed, Justin Roiland’s ad-lib voice-acting, his sparks of creative brilliance, is a testament to the value of living in the moment.Morty’s path has led him to an Akira-homage, in which he is tethered to the ground and encased in black ooze, a literal tree, a bystander to his own life. Meeseeks was pretty funny.Eventually, the crystal reshapes Morty’s speech, down to the very syllable, the adherence to a linear path meaning that Morty has completely lost his individuality, the desire to die peacefully overtaking his life.
Hopefully, McDonalds is prepared for another riot-inducing outburst from Roiland.
